Applied Networking Research Prize presentations at IETF 115

The Internet Research Task Force (IRTF) open session at the IETF 115 meeting will feature presentations on research into domain hijacking, the IETF's organizational culture, and DDoS attack detection and mitigation.
The Applied Networking Research Prize (ANRP) awards recognize the best recent results in applied networking research, interesting new research ideas of potential relevance to the Internet standards community, and people who are likely to have an impact on Internet standards and technologies in the future. The prize focuses on people or ideas that would not otherwise get much exposure or be able to participate in networking discussions.
The IRTF selected seven research papers to receive ANRP awards in 2022. Topics covered include the effect of solar superstorms on the Internet, the risks related to registrar name management, and human rights advocacy at the Internet Engineering Task Force. Three award winners will present during the IETF 115 London meeting, following presentations at the IETF 113 Vienna and the IETF 114 Philadelphia meetings.
The award winners presenting during IETF 115 are:
Gautam Akiwate for his work on the risks of domain hijacking due to registrar practices, following a presentation of the paper “Risky BIZness: Risks Derived from Registrar Name Management” at the SIGCOMM 2021 Internet Measurement Conference.
Corinne Cath for her ethnographic work on the IETF’s distinct organizational culture and how its "rough" edges limit the ability of human rights advocates to get their concerns included in technical discussions, published in the Telecommunications Policy Journal, volume 45, number 6, 2021, with an updated version of the work available in open access form as Chapter 7 of Corinne’s PhD thesis.
Daniel Wagner for his work on DDoS attack detection and mitigation as presented in the paper “United We Stand: Collaborative Detection and Mitigation of Amplification DDoS Attacks at Scale” published as part of the proceedings of the ACM SIGSAC Conference on Computer and Communications Security, 2021.
The full talks will be streamed live during the IRTF Open Meeting at IETF 115 and will be available afterwards on the IETF YouTube channel. The IETF 115 meeting agenda is still being determined and registration is currently open.
